Beginning with the emergence of the notion of the Gothic style in architecture (opus francigenum), this book highlights, through the artistic production of the main driving centers, the exchanges that took place between Italian and transalpine art from the late 12th to the 14th century.
Paths and relationships are considered by looking at the different channels along which they traveled: the art of the last Swabian rulers, the renewal of sculpture in Tuscany, the choices of the papal curia in Rome and its effects in Assisi, the suntuary arts in Siena, and painting in Florence and Avignon. These phenomena are not only described, but elucidated in the light of the activity of the artists and the choices made by patrons, thus offering a glimpse of the situation of Italian art in the European panorama of the period under consideration.
